My formal teaching career started a little over 32 years ago in rural Zimbabwe. It was me, a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a few textbook and 45 students. The school's Gestautner machine being the most advanced piece of technology we had.
I like this last paragraph as it makes the start of my career sound so adventurous. But it is not quite true; It was not just me. There was a community of teachers that supported each other and helped guide the green teacher that I was.
And that has stayed with me. An important (and enjoyable) part what I do as a teacher is sharing with other teachers all the new tricks we learned.
