CON06.15 - Using Prezi to Facilitate Active Learning

Empowering learners and effecting change requires pedagogy that matches learner aspirations with learning outcomes (Robinson 2011). It is contingent upon the instructor to provide the scaffolding that facilitates the learning opportunities within any course and within any session. This session demonstrates how the use of Prezi (Smith 2015) can facilitate active learning i.e. learning that is both divergent, creative and suited to concept attainment and construct reflection (Bennett and Rolheiser 2001).

Prezi is used as the means to both design and present an interactive session that will utilise WALS to illustrate the author’s experience with Prezi as a course host for the Geography 4100: Geography of Change course at UWO. The session will mirror that of regular class, in that Prezi will be used to structure the session, host resources, supply the template for interactive audience engagement and the opportunity for feedback.

Consistent with the use of Prezi as an active learning pedagogy (Smith 2012), the session will demonstrate through audience participation, engagement and active learning, how Prezi can be utilized to facilitate active learning that empowers, engages and effects change. The session will highly interactive and is designed such that the interaction of the participants is both educational process and product. This teaching praxis does not prescribe precise convergent learning outcomes but rather facilitates the active attainment of concepts, constructs and understanding consistent with the engagement of the participants as per their needs, wants and divergent creativity. The session will illustrate this pedagogy, its benefits and potentialities for empowered learning and thus provide learning outcomes suited to other practitioners either introducing such concepts, expanding upon existing constructs and/or extending ideas around pedagogy.
