CON11.12 - Craft the first 15 minutes of your course to ignite student interest

How can you start your course for best effect? Motivation is one of the most potent factors influencing student learning (Svinicki, 2004). A dynamic introduction sets the tone for the whole term. We want students to share our enthusiasm and find our courses compelling (Barkley, 2010). Course highlights, questions, expectations and challenges could figure in, as can showing students something unique about you and your approach. We’ll practise ways to custom-craft the first fifteen minutes of a course to motivate learners. Break away from traditional approaches! The level of motivation your students bring will be transformed, for better or worse, by what happens in class (Gross Davis, 1993). You will leave this session having participated in several techniques, including crafting (or having started) an ‘enthusiasm statement’ or considered other ways to share your enthusiasm for the topic. You will also have participated in other opening techniques, such as asking questions about the syllabus and the instructor, and answering questions I pose about your interest (and challenges) with the course material. You will be invited to share your own successes and consider new ideas. I will provide additional web resources for you to explore after the session is over.
