PK07.11a - Preparing Undergraduate Students for Post-Graduation Interviews: The Value of Mock Interviews

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In their final semester of the Applied Human Nutrition (AHN) program at the University of Guelph, undergraduate students consider post-graduation employment, graduate school and/or dietetic internship positions. To help students prepare for interviews, academic staff and faculty collaborate with the AHN Student Association to conduct one-on-one, group, and multiple-mini mock interviews. Four to five staff, faculty and graduate students interview 30 to 40 students over two, 1.5 hour sessions. Students are asked questions similar to those in “real” interviews, and receive feedback on their communication and professionalism during a debriefing session. Students indicate they feel more confident and prepared, and that the mock interviews align with their later experiences in real interviews. This presentation will provide student, faculty and academic staff perspectives on, and “best practices” for, this collaboration including organizing, conducting and debriefing mock interviews. We will also provide feedback from student interviewees. Participants will be able to describe the value and implementation of mock interviews designed to increase undergraduates’ preparation for interviewing for post-graduate positions.
