A ‘Win-Win’ situation for the students in the Office Administration Programs at Fanshawe College AND for college/community partners who can benefit from their service! Students in the Office Administration Programs graduate with a 2-year diploma, with either an Executive or Medical specialty. There is also a one-year certificate for general office administration. The areas of study include keyboarding, office management and organization, customer service, human resources, business in the Canadian economy, medical terminology, Microsoft Office, accounting, presentation skills, business math, and communication. The professors in the Office Administration programs agree that student’s motivation for classroom learning increases when they have had an opportunity to apply their learning in a real world setting. The Live Client program provides live, real world experiences where the students can use and hone the skills they are learning in their program while providing much needed administrative support for the client. Clients include educational institutions, business, retail, and not for profit organizations. Events are screened and approved by the Live Client Faculty Coordinators to ensure that the needs of the event align with the skills acquired by the students in the classroom setting. Once approved, students volunteer their time to assist in the events. ‘Events’ include conferences, workshops, award ceremonies, meetings, office support, and research assistance. There are numerous roles students can assume, allowing them to build their skills while networking for future career opportunities. The debrief sessions following events allows for an increase in an assimilation of the students’ skills, as well as provides an opportunity for reflection. (Education & Training, 51(4), 2009). Students have a place to practice their skills and the client’s needs are met at the same time. These same clients then have the potential to become co-op placement supervisors or future employers for our graduates. A win-win for all!
